Rail Services

Reinvesting in our railways makes sense and we see this type of investment throughout other parts of Australia and internationally.

High performance rail freight services and passenger rail services are absolutely connected. A high-quality rail freight system is better geared to support passenger rail and a well utilised passenger rail service.

Reinvesting in our railways makes sense and we see this type of investment throughout other parts of Australia and internationally.

From an economic perspective, improved rail freight means a more efficient and affordable way to get more product to port on time and on budget, growing our economy and increasing opportunity for our part of the state.

From a social perspective it means better passenger access to our capital city for Mildura, Ouyen, Woomelang and Birchip residents means better access to health services, education, entertainment, sports and shopping for the people who need it the most.

I support the full completion of stage two of the Murray Basin Rail project, including; standardising the Yelta to Maryborough, Ouyen to Murrayville lines and upgrading the Maryborough to Ararat line.

The Victorian and Federal Governments must bridge the funding the shortfall for completion of the project in full – half finishing the project is not an option.

Stage three of the project must be completed to include the conversion of the Manangatang to Maryborough and Sea Lake to Korong Vale lines to standard gauge as well as the reinstallation of rail sidings at Ouyen and other locations on the Maryborough to Mildura line where they have been removed.

Mildura remains the only major regional centre in the country without a passenger rail connection to its capital city.

I will advocate for the commencement of a dedicated project to return passenger services to the Mildura Line which will work in tandem with the third stage of the Murray Basin Rail Project and will include lobbying for the instillation of boom-gates at level crossings on the Mildura line, the creation of rolling stock suitable for passenger services on a standard gauge line and the restoration of railway stations at Dunolly, Donald, Birchip, Woomelang, Ouyen, Red Cliffs and Mildura.
